Identification
Adults can reach 55 cm in length for a weight of 941 g. Male bigger than female. Plumage mostly black with a slight dark blue iridescence. White belly and wing patch. Small crest on back of head. Red eyering, black casque and bill.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in the southern half of Africa, from Angola to DR Congo and south Kenya, then south to eastern coastal South Africa. Lives in evergreen forests, deciduous forests and gallery forests, up to 2200 m.

Status : The species has a large distribution and can be locally common. It occurs in protected areas and can survive in man-made habitats.
