Identification
Adults grow to 65 cm in length for a weight of 1.6 kg. Wings and back dull brown-black, all white tail. Belly, breast and neck rufous brown. Red and yellow bill. This subspecies has a large red casque with totally flat horizontal top.

Range and habitat
The species is endemic to the southern half of Philippines. This subspecies occurs on Mindanao, Basilan, Balut, Talicud, Bucas, Siargao and Dinagat. Lives in primary evergreen forests and tall secondary forests, up to 2100 m.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is still locally common but has declined in many other areas because of deforestation, habitat fragmentation and, locally, hunting.
