Identification
Adults can reach a body length of 71 cm for a weight of 770 g. Unmistakable. Adult specimens are almost entirely bright scarlet red, juveniles being more dull pink. Dark grey to black bill when breeding. Red face, red legs.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, from central Colombia and Venezuela to coastal north Brazil. Isolated populations in Ecuador, Panama and south-east Brazil. Lives in freshwater marshes, flooded areas, mangroves and coastal areas.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is still locally abundant but marked declines have been observed because of loss of habitat on a global scale and hunting locally.
