Identification
Adults can reach a length of 53.5 cm for a weight of 770 g. Unmistakable with its broad, flat and thick black bill. Black cap and crest above head. Dark subspecies with dark grey wings and back, brownish breast and belly.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from east Costa Rica and Panama to north Colombia. Species found from Mexico to Colombia, south to south Brazil and Bolivia. Lives in mangroves and areas of dense forests near coastal rivers.

Status : The species is fairly common in its range but remains unconspicuous. Local declines have been noted in deforested areas.
