Notes : No subspecies known. Formerly placed in genus Bubulcus.
Identification
The species grow to 56 cm in length for a weight of 510 g. Non breeding adults have all white plumage. Yellow eyes, orange-yellow bill. When breeding the species has all head, breast and back orange but clear orange bill.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in eastern and southern Asia, from Pakistan to east Japan, south to Australia and New Zealand. Lives in open grasslands, marshes, fields, suburban parks, to 4500 m.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species has benefited from forest clearing and can adapt to life within busy cities. It is likely the most abundant of heron species in southeast Asia. It has yet to be assessed on its own since it has been recently split.
