Identification
The species grow to 45 cm in length for a weight of 300 g. Yellow bill with black tip and blue naked skin above. Head light orange becoming orange-brown on breast. Black back feathers with elongated fringes. White wings and belly.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in central Thailand, south Cambodia and Vietnam and winters in north Malaysia. Species also found in western and central Indonesia. Lives in freshwater swamps, ponds and lakes, rarely mangroves, up to 1500 m.

Status : The species is locally very common and has been expanding its range to south Sumatra and the Philippines. No known threats at this time.
