Identification
Adults can grow to 98 cm in length for a weight of 2 kg. Forehead and crown black with small crest. Black stripe on throat, ashy grey wings. This subspecies has lighter neck coloration, nearly all white, when breeding, and white forehead patch.
Range and habitat
Subspecies found from China and Japan to Indonesia. The species occurs from Europe and subsaharan Africa to eastern Asia. Lives in all kinds of shallow water areas, usually with trees nearby.

Status : The species is widespread but has been locally persecuted. Threatened by hunting and loss of habitat in Asia and Madagascar.
