Identification
The species grows to 30 cm for a weight of 142 g. Grey throat and breast, dull chestnut crown and nape. Short light red-pink bill. Rest of plumage brown with rows of black-edged white bands, broader on wings than on back. Small subspecies with lighter and duller plumage (especially on flanks).

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South East Asia, from India and Sri Lanka to south China, Taiwan, Philippines, Peninsular Malaysia and Greater Sundas. Subspecies found from Vietnam to Malaysia, Sumatra, Java and south Borneo. Lives in wetlands and mangroves, rice fields, rarely forests, to 1850 m.

Status : The species is widespread and common in suitable habitat. It is adaptable but remains very shy and rarely seen in the wild.
