Identification
Adults can grow up to 28 cm in length. Head dark grey with red eye-ring, black bill and conspicuous white cheek patch. Most of plumage grey to brown grey with mottling on wings and back. Flanks with broad white edges on feathers.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South East Asia and is endemic to the montane areas of central and south Sumatra island, in Indonesia. Lives in broadleaf forests in mountains and foothills, from 500 to 2000 meters.

Status : The species is locally common but its true status remains understudied. Probably locally declining because of habitat loss and hunting.
