Identification
The species can reach 29 cm in length for a weight of 243 g. Bright red bill and red eye-ring. Black head with variable amount of white areas. Chestnut-brown plumage with black spots on back and wings. Black flanks with white edges.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South East Asia and is endemic to the montane areas of Sumatra island, Indonesia. Lives in primary montane forests and scrub in pine forests, from 900 to 2500 m.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species’ status is almost unknown. It occurs in few localities but its habitat isn’t much threatened so far. Not protected by law at this point.
