Identification
The species grows to 39 cm in length for a weight of 800 g. Bright red bill and legs. This subspecies is browner and darker than others. Blue-grey crown and breast. Flanks with beige, black and brown stripes, rest of plumage vinous brown.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from eastern Afghanistan to east Nepal. Species found from Bulgaria and Greece to North India, Nepal, Mongolia and China. Lives in arid and semi-arid areas with short grasses and shrubs, to 5000 m.

Status : The species has a huge range and its populations are increasing. It has been introduced in many parts of the world. Declining in eastern Europe.
