Identification
Adults can reach 89 cm in length for a weight of 2.5 kg. Conspicuous crest on head. Cere and wattles bright orange-red. Plumage shiny black. Male has white rump and prominent wattles. Female has rufous rump and no wattles.
Range and habitat
This species lives in scattered areas of Amazonian basin in South America, in west Brazil, south-east Colombia, east Ecuador, North east Peru and Bolivia. It lives in tropical lowland humid forests, up to 300 m.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix III
Status : The species has a highly fragmented range and suffered local extinctions because of deforestation and hunting. Poorly known from the wild. Targeted by a captive breeding program in South America and USA.
