Identification
Adults grow to 50 cm in length for a weight of 860 g. Grey head with dark cap and dirty red-grey bill. Breast reddish-brown with clear mottling. Flanks covered with dark edged white blotches. Dark back with clear brown feather-edges.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in southeast Asia, from central Indonesia (Sulawesi) and nearby south Philippines (Mindanao) to New Guinea and north Queensland. Lives in freshwater swamps, lakes, rivers, marshes, surrounded by trees.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is common and widespread. It seems to extend its range to Australia and vagrants are recorded in Solomon Islands as well.
