Identification
Adults can reach a length of 46 cm for a weight of 910 g. Males are mostly black with purplish iridescence on cheeks. Dark yellow eyes. Dark bill with white base and white ring near tip. Female duller, plumage mostly brown, darker.
Range and habitat
This species breeds in Alaska and in most of central and south Canada. Winters in most of west and south USA, south to Caribbean Islands and Panama. Lives in shallow marshes, estuaries, usually near boreal forest and prairies.

Status : The species remains common in many parts of its range and some of its populations have increased. Vulnerable to habitat destruction.
