Identification
Large duck reaching 81 cm in length for a weight of 4.3 kg. Dark brown plumage, black breast, iridescent green flight feathers. Head white with black speckles, white wing patch. Subspecies with more white on head and iridescent back.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs on Sumatra. Other subspecies found in mainland South East Asia in east India, Bangladesh, Indochina and south Thailand. Lives in pools, marshes and ponds in swampy forests.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species has dramatically declined because of overhunting and intense deforestation pressure throughout its range. Extinct on Java.
