Identification
Adults can reach a length of 84 cm for a weight of 3.8 kg. Long dark red bill with black edges, bright red legs. Most common plumage color is snow white with black flight feathers. Blue morph exists with mostly dark brown to grey-blue color.

Range and habitat
This subspecies breeds from Greenland to east Canada, winters in eastern-central USA. Species also found from Alaska to north-west Canada. Lives in grassy tundra and stony ground near lakes, river deltas or ponds.

Status : The species is considered safe and locally very common to abundant. Both subspecies have increased their numbers in recent times.
