Notes : No subspecies known. Sometimes, A. carolinensis is treated as a subspecies.
Identification
Adults can reach a length of 38 cm for a weight of 450 g. Female is dark brown with clearer belly. Breeding male is grey with salmon-pink black-spotted breast, chestnut head with green area from eye to neck. No white line on flanks.
Range and habitat
This species breeds in most of northern Europe and Asia, winters in south Europe, Asia and north of Africa. Lives in lakes, shallow marshes and slow moving rivers with dense vegetation.
