Notes : No subspecies known. Sometimes treated as a subspecies of A. crecca.
Identification
Adults can reach a length of 38 cm for a weight of 450 g. Female is dark brown with clearer belly. Breeding male is grey with salmon-pink black-spotted breast, chestnut head with green area from eye to neck. Vertical white line on flanks.
Range and habitat
This species breeds from Alaska to Canada and north-west USA. Winters in USA, south to Panama. Lives in lakes, shallow marshes and slow moving rivers with dense vegetation.

Status : This species is very common in the wild. Loss of habitat and hunting can become long term threats.
