Identification
Adults can reach a length of 73 cm for a weight of 2.3 kg. Unmistakable. Pink bill with dark edges, red legs. Plumage mostly beige with fine vermiculations, darker neck, eyering, nape and wings. Black tail, white wing patch.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in most of Africa, south of Sahara and around the Nile Valley. It has been introduced in many European countries. Lives in wetlands in open and semi-open areas, wet grasslands, to 3800 m.

Status : The species is common to abundant in many parts of its range and often regarded as an agricultural pest. Occasionally shot and persecuted.
