Identification
Adults can reach a total length of 100 cm for a weight of 2.8 kg. plumage black with glossy brown tinge on wings. Small crest on nape. This subspecies has only scattered white feathers on nape when breeding.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in Australia and New Zealand. Species found in most of Europe, central and south Asia, Africa, Australia, Canada and Greenland. Lives always near water, marine or inland. Breeds on rocky islands or shores.

Status : The species remains very common around its range. It has been persecuted in Europe but numbers are increasing.
