Identification
The species grows to 25 cm in length for a weight of 100 g, female heavier than male. Long black bill with yellow part on lower mandible. Plumage white with blue wings, greenish-blue back and cap. Black mask on face, white lores. Subspecies with darker blue forehead and wings.
Range and habitat
Subspecies occurs from south India to Peninsular Malaysia and north Sumatra. Species found from northeast African coasts to New Guinea and Palau. Lives in coastal areas, in mangroves, nearby cultivated areas and parks, to 1500 m.

Status : The species is very widespread and locally abundant. Some insular subspecies have very small populations and are threatened by habitat loss.
