Identification
Small kingfisher with large bright red bill and legs. Plumage mostly dark brown with white throat and belly patch, blue wings. Subspecies smaller and paler brown on belly and flanks.
Range and habitat
Subspecies occurs from east India to Vietnam, south to Sumatra and west Java. Found in wide variety of open habitats, near or far from water, near roads and cities, to 5000 m.

Status : The species very adaptable, locally abundant and increasing at the expense of other less adaptable species. Locally declining in Turkey and middle east.
