Identification
Large bright red bill, black-brown head. Rest of plumage dark blue with violet tinge on belly and back. Wings brighter blue with large black patch in the middle. Red legs.

Range and habitat
Species endemic to Java and Bali (Indonesia). Found in a wide variety of habitats, from open forests, pastures, coastal scrub, dried marshes to urban gardens and parks, to 1500 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is still locally common and occurs in protected areas. However, its range seems to be contracting and the reasons for this are yet to be understood. Surveys are needed.
