Identification
The species can grow to 17 cm in length for a weight of 23 g. Very long red bill (male has half of bill black). Plumage ultramarine blue with chestnut frontal patch, white cheek patch, white throat and chestnut belly. Bright blue back.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from Sumatra and Java to Sulawesi and Lombok. Species found from South India and Sri Lanka to Greater Sundas and Sulawesi. It lives in streams and marshes near forested areas, occasionally near plantations.

Status : The species is widespread but never common. The fact that it lives in forested areas makes it vulnerable to habitat loss throughout its range.
