Identification
The species grows to 102 cm long for a weight of 4,4 kg and a wingspan of 165 cm. Plumage mostly white except for black flight feathers. Bright red bill and legs, black area around eyes. This subspecies is a bit larger than nominate.

Range and habitat
Subspecies breeds in Turkestan and winters in India. The species is also found in most of Europe, western Asia and winters in Africa. Lives in wetlands, grasslands, steppes and other open habitats, to 3500 m.
