Identification
Adults can reach a body length of 12.2 cm. Small branched filaments on top of eyes. Thick lips. Body color variable, ranging from nearly white to dark brownish-black. Head usually brown to reddish with bright pink-red lips.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Atlantic Ocean, from the USA (North Carolina) and Bermudas to Brazil, through western Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Lives in shallow and clear coastal waters, over rocky and coral bottoms.

Status : The species isn’t currently threatened. It is reasonably common and even locally abundant throughout its range.
