Identification
The species reaches up to 100 cm in body length, usually less. It shows a pattern of medium alternating red and yellow-white bands, with separating narrow black bands. Head is black with yellow to red snout and yellow nape.

Range and habitat
This subspecies is found in south-west USA, in Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico. Also occurs in Mexico, in the Sonora and Chihuahua states. Occurs in rocky areas in woodlands, often near streams and valleys.

CITES : Not listed
Status : The species is still locally common and occurs in protected areas in USA. In Mexico, its populations are not protected and could be vulnerable.
