Identification
Adults can reach 48 cm in length for a weight of 787 g. Long yellow legs, black and yellow bill, yellow eyes. Most of plumage brown with heavy dark streaking. White belly, white forehead and chin. Black and white supercillium bands.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in central and south America, from south Mexico and Costa Rica to north Colombia and Venezuela, Guianas, north Brazil and Hispaniola. Subspecies found in most of South American range. Mostly found in open grasslands and savannas, usually in dry areas.

Status : The species is safe so far and some of its populations are increasing because of logging. Vulnerable to road traffic at night. Rare on Hispaniola.
