Identification
Adults can reach up to 11 cm in length for a weight of 16 g. Thick bill with black tip. Male has bright yellow forehead and crown, lower throat and belly. Rest of plumage (including throat) dark violet-blue. Female yellow-green with grey collar.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, from extreme east Panama to Colombia, east to Venezuela, south to Bolivia, central and east Brazil. Lives in humid forests, forest clearings and edges, plantations, up to 2250 meters.

Status : The species remains locally abundant in its range and doesn’t seem to be facing any threats. Population from Brazilian Atlantic coast is endangered.
