Identification
Body length of 41 cm, weight of 890 g. Short grey legs, long neck, round head with upward curving crest on nape. Plumage grey to beige-brown with small black streaks on breast, black and clear spotting on wings.

Range and habitat
South America, from extreme south-east Bolivia to most of Argentina except north-east. Also found in south Chile. Occurs in arid grasslands, open woodlands, savannas, steppes and scrubland.

Status : The species is widespread and locally abundant. Some populations are threatened by over-hunting and habitat loss.
