Identification
Adults can reach a body length of 71 cm for a weight of 1.1 kg. Very easily recognizable with its entirely white plumage except for black primary feathers. Face is naked and bright red. This subspecies has tip of bill black during breeding.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in coastal regions of South-east USA and west Mexico, south Panama. Species also found in Panama, Colombia and Venezuela. Lives mostly in coastal wetlands, estuaries, tidal mudflats and mangrove swamps.

Status : The species is very common in the wild. Some populations are declining because of habitat destruction because of hydroelectric plans and pollution.
