Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 32 cm although species rarely grows above 16 cm. Laterally-compressed body with visible decurved lateral line. Coloration is silvery to shiny golden with dark reddish fins.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in North America, from Nova Scotia (Canada) to Great Lakes and most of eastern half of USA, east to Oklahoma and Texas. Lives in vegetated swamps, lakes, creeks and small rivers.

Status : The species remains common in most of its range so far although local declines occurred in recent times, mostly because of habitat destruction.
