Identification
Adults can reach a length of 10 cm for a weight up to 14 g. Male has a deep black plumage with bright red eye and white cap. Female is green with yellowish throat and belly and grey tinge on head. Light-colored eye-ring, red eyes.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, from Costa Rica to north Colombia, then from east Venezuela to central Brazil and east Peru. Also coastal east Brazil. Subspecies found from Costa Rica to Panama. Lives in humid forests and tall secondary woodlands, up to 1600 meters.

Status : The species is assessed as fairly common to common in most of its range although the east coastal Brazilian population could be endangered.
