Identification
Adults can reach up to 43.2 cm in length for a weight of 220 g. Concave forehead, slightly high profile. Coloration is olive-green with orange tinge on belly and blue vermiculations from head to tail. Red-tipped black opercular flap.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in North America, from North Carolina to Florida, east to Nueces river in Texas. Introduced in many parts of USA. Lives in deeper waters of warm ponds, swamps and slow-moving rivers.

Status : The species is very common and its populations are either stable to slightly declining throughout its range.
