Identification
Adults can reach 42 cm in length for a weight of 600 g. Dark grey bill and black legs. Plumage mostly brown with faint black striping on neck, crown darker brown, wings dark brown with each feathers edged rich brown. Yellow eye-ring.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Asia, from Pakistan and India to east china, south to Borneo, Sumatra, Java and Bali. Lives in small lakes, ponds, mangroves, marshes, flooded fields with trees nearby.

Status : The species is common to abundant in parts of its range. It may be declining because of persecution from rice farmers and loss of habitat.
