Identification
Adults reach a length of 58 cm for a weight of 1.2 kg. Plumage globally chocolate brown with black and white faint stripes on neck, mottling and spotting on breast. Lower flanks and belly white with black spotting. Black bill and feet.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in the Caribbean Sea Islands, in Bahamas, Turk & Caicos, Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles, south to Dominica. Lives in swamps, marshes and mangroves with good tree cover.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species has a large but highly fragmented range and has been extirpated from many islands because of habitat loss, disturbance and hunting.
