Identification
Adults can reach 12 cm in length for a weight of 15 g. Male is bright blue with black throat, tail, forehead and eye-contour. Black wings with blue stripes. Female is green with whitish throat and light blue head.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in Central and South America, from Honduras to Colombia, then east to Guianas, south to Bolivia, Paraguay and north Argentina. Lives in tropical humid forest, gallery forests, open woodlands, up to 2000 m.

Status : The species has a huge range and remains at least locally common. Vulnerable to deforestation in South Brazil and Central America.
