Identification
Adults can reach 45 cm in length and a weight of 700 g. Entire head, nape, breast, wings, tail and lower back black with purple to blue iridescence. Rest of plumage is white. Bill and legs entirely black.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in most of subsaharan Africa except from eastern Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. Also found on Madagascar and a few islands off African coast. Lives in open woodlands, grasslands, savannas, lakeshores, up to 3000 m.

Status : The species is common to abundant in most of its range despite of persecution from locals. It’s often considered as a pest.
