Identification
Adults can reach 13 cm in length for a weight of 18 g. Male is unmistakable with its reddish-brown plumage with dark wings and conspicuous erectile black and red crest on forehead. Female is duller and has no crest.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in Guyana, Suriname, north-east Brazil, south Ecuador, Peru and from south Brazil and Bolivia to north Argentina. Lives in shrubland, grassland, savanna, cultivated areas, up to 3100 m.
