Identification
Body length of 150 cm, shoulder height of 85 cm, weight of 150 kg. Very broad and large head with prominent warts on cheeks and under eyes. Males have very large tusks. Body is grey with long grey-brown hairs on back and forehead.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in subsaharan Africa, from Mauritania to Ethiopia, south to South Africa. This subspecies is found in the southern part of the range. Typically found in open countries such as savannas and bushlands.

Status : This species has a wide range and remains common in protected areas. Loss of habitat, rinderpest and over-predation can cause local extinctions.
