Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 12 cm. Males are slightly bigger with little hump on forehead. Head is pinksh-grey with red markings. Chin and breast are black. Rest of body olive to light beige with vertical dark bands and spots.

Range and habitat
The species is found in Central America and is endemic to Mexico occurring in the Nautla and Misantla river drainages, on Atlantic slope of the country. Lives in fast-flowing rivers, slow-moving rivers, over stony bottoms.

Status : The species seems to be fairly common in its small range. It may be vulnerable to over-collection and pollution.
