Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 30 cm. Males are bigger than females with a slightly bulbous forehead. Coloration olive to beige with bluish-white dots on whole body. Black blotches on back half of flanks, near tail peduncle.

Range and habitat
The species was formerly restricted to the lower Rio Grande drainage in south USA. Introduced in Texas, Florida and north Mexico. Lives in pools and still areas of rivers, often near vegetation.

Status : The species apparently remains common within its range in spite of water pollution. It has been introduced in south USA and Mexico.
