Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 17 cm. Males are bigger than females with a bulbous forehead. Most of body is bluish-white to grey with large light blue dots. Chin often black. Faint black bands on back of body.
Range and habitat
The species is found in Central America and is endemic to Mexico occurring in the Panuco and Soto La Marina river drainages, on Atlantic slope of the country. Lives in fast-flowing rivers, lakes and still waters.

Status : The species seems to be fairly common in the wild. It has been introduced in South USA rivers.
