Identification
Adults can reach a total length of 30 cm. Unmistakable, short snout, black horn on forehead, medium-sized curved dorsal fin. Black color with a band of white dots on flanks. Black snout and face-band. Yellow dorsal and caudal fins.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean from Andaman Islands to Samoa, south to Rowley Shoals, north to south Japan. Lives in deep lagoons, seaward reefs, from 2 to 250 meters.

Status : The species is widespread but globally uncommon within its range. Possibly vulnerable to habitat destruction as it is dependent on corals.
