Identification
Adults can reach a total length of 30 cm for a weight of 110 g. Unmistakable. Coloration variable, from grey to olive-green with dark spots and blotches. Feather-like external gills well visible on sides of head.

Range and habitat
The species lives in central America and is endemic to Mexico, being only found around Xochimilco and Chalco lakes, near Mexico City. Lives in deep rivers, canals and lakes with lots of aquatic vegetation.

Conservation
IUCN RED LIST : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is dramatically declining and is almost extinct in the wild because of diminution of habitat, water pollution and over-collection.
