Identification
Adults can reach a total length of 35 cm. Large triangular head, flattened body and tail. Coloration variable, black ground coloration with more or less visible olive-green to yellow blotches. This subspecies is the brightest.

Range and habitat
The species lives in North America, from central and western Canada to most of central and western USA, east to Texas. Lives in deserts, semi-deserts, woodlands, montane areas, grasslands.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species is considered common in many parts of its range although some isolated populations in Utah and south USA are declining.
