Identification
Adults can reach up to 35 cm in length for a weight of 390 g. Dark bluish-grey plumage with pink-brown spiky plumes on neck. Wings reddish-brown with white spots on flight feathers. Black tail. This subspecies is clearest and brightest with larger white dots on wings.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from Senegal to Eritrea, south to south Tanzania. Species also found from Angola to Zimbabwe, south to South Africa. Lives in savannas, open woodlands and gardens, up to 3000 meters.
