Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 46 cm for a weight of 450 g. Fairly large mouth, big eyes, head profile almost convex. Body yellow with thin horizontal blue lines on head and flanks. Dorsal and caudal fins dark brown to black.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in Western Atlantic Ocean from Florida to Antilles and Gulf of Mexico, south to Brazil. Occurs on rocky and coral reefs, also near drop-offs, down to 30 meters.

Status : The species seems to be at least locally common in its big range. Local declines due to habitat degradation may occur.
