Identification
Adults can reach up to 24 cm in length. Body slightly compressed laterally with elongated head and very thick lips. Males have electric blue coloration on flanks and fins with beige head. Females are yellow-beige with two black bands.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in eastern Africa, in Lake Malawi, Lake Malombe and upper and middle Shire river. Lives in quiet waters and sheltered bays, both over sandy and rocky bottoms.

Status : The species seems to be globally common within its range and doesn’t face any threats at present.
