Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 61 cm for a weight of 4.1 kg. Red eyes. Coloration is cream to beige with reddish-brown spots all over body and fins. Pectoral fins are reddish, caudal fin has black edge. Black spots on upper back.
Range and habitat
This species occurs in Atlantic Ocean, west from north USA to Gulf of Mexico and to south Brazil, east from Azores, St Helen and Sao Tome to Gulf of Guinea. Mostly found around rocky reefs, from water surface to 120 meters.

Status : The species has a large range and occurs in fairly big numbers, even in areas where a lot of fishing is done. Not known to be threatened at present.
